                                            Healthy Start

MCHC's Healthy Start Program is part of a national effort in 100 communities to improve the health and well-being of women, infants, and children.  Infant mortality and low birthweight remain major public health issues in the U.S. and Chester County, particularly among women of color.

Bilingual, bicultural Family Health Advocates in Coatesville, Kennett Square, Phoenixville, Oxford and West Chester provide prenatal and postpartum home visiting, health insurance enrollment, health education, and connections to community resources to increase self-sufficiency.

Healthy Start provides individual and group Prenatal and Parent Education in both English and Spanish on pregnancy, prenatal care, labor and delivery, and infant safety and development.

For more detailed information about the results of our program please look at our 10-Year Report "Healthy Start: Closing the Gap ... Improving the Health of Mothers and Children in Chester County"

Kennett Square Family Center

MCHC's Healthy Start Program is part of a national effort in 100 communities to improve the health and well-being of women, infants, and children.  Infant mortality and low birthweight remain major public health issues in the U.S. and Chester County, particularly among women of color.

The Kennett Family Center works to ensure that children through age 5 begin school prepared to succeed.  Using the Parents As Teachers, “evidence based” Born to LearnTM curriculum, families receive home visits, developmental screenings, parenting education and support groups, parent and child activities, health insurance enrollment, and linkages to medical, social, and educational services.

Health Insurance Enrollment

MCHC coordinates a countywide effort to enroll uninsured pregnant women, children and other adults into Medical Assistance or CHIP. There are an estimated 45,000 people living in Chester County that lack health insurance.

We are in partnership with 3 community-based organizations to provide parents with "hands-on" assistance to apply for children's health insurance. Help is available in English and Spanish at numerous locations offering day and evening hours.

Training and technical assistance including Medical Interpreter Training are offered to health and social service organizations to enhance their capacity to provide accessible, high quality care to a multicultural community.  Cultural effectiveness is critical in reducing racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes.
