Cross Cultural Workshops

Maternal and Child Health Consortium is offering a Professional Education Series to meet the opportunities and challenges of providing accessible, high quality healthcare to multicultural communities.

This program prepares health/human services providers and interpreters to work together more effectively to facilitate access to high quality, culturally-sensitive health/human services for patients/clients with limited English proficiency.

The program training has 3 components: development of interpreter service protocols; interpreter training and skill assessment; and strategies for working with interpreters. Organizations wishing to send interpreters for training must participate in all 3 training components.

The description of each of the components is as follows:

Interpreter Protocol Development
Tuesday, September 14, 2010
9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This workshop assists participating organizations in developing language access policies and procedures, including interpreter service protocols. An agency administrator must attend the protocol development training.

Agencies that have already participated in the Interpreter Training Program and developed interpreter protocols do not need to repeat this component.

Interpreter Training*
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
September 29, 30, and October 1, 2010
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Prior assessment and registration is required in order to attend workshop.

Interpreters will receive training on: their role and responsibilities; cultural competencies; specialized interpretation techniques; medical procedures and terminology; and problem-solving skills and strategies.

Class participants must attend all three modules to be eligible for certification. At the conclusion of the training, participants complete a written post-test and participate in a role-play assessment of their interpretation skills and their language ability. Those who achieve passing scores receive certificates.

Note: Priority will be given to interpreters who work/volunteer in health/human services settings or who accompany patients to health care appointments in Chester County. This is not a remedial language course. Class participants must be fluent in English and another language.

*Registrants must be evaluated by instructor prior to workshop confirmation
